Blog Entry # 3

Blog Entry Number 3
Artist: Richard Avedon
Carmen coat by Cardin, Place Francois-Premier Paris, 1957
Size 45.6 x 36 cm
Link to the Photograph http://www.vam.ac.uk/vastatic/microsites/photography/magnify.php?imageid=im00015

Subject Matter: The subject of the photograph is the woman. She moves gracefully through the streets of Paris. She is wearing a rain coat and carrying an umbrella which signifies she may be running to seek shelter from the storm. Even though she may be in a hurry we see her leaping off of the sidewalk ever so serene and gracefully.

Form:
Contrast
Light and value
Motion
Point of view
Relationship of the elements within the frame

Interpretation:
The photograph represents motion and grace. The woman running through the streets seeking shelter moves ever so gracefully through Paris. The snapshot was taken at a high shutter speed and captures her just as her feet are about to reach the ground. She is in motion and will be as soon as her feet touch down. This silver gelatin piece helps to capture what Paris was during the 1970’s. The European’s are always ahead of their times in fashion, class, and style which is what this photograph represents.

The image is very high contrast then which focuses on the light and value of the piece, the lights and the darks. The image captures a woman in motion as we see the snapshot taken from a low level point of view.

A.) Blog Entry #2
B.) Photographer: Ansel Adams
C/D.) Title: Road Nevada Desert 1960
E.) Link: http://www.fotos.org/galeria/data/565/Ansel-Adams-Road-Nevada-Desert-1960.jpg

Analysis Of The Photograph
A.) The primary subject matter within the image is the silver gelatin road to which life takes us down. In the distance we see the horizon filled with mountainous obstacles. Further down the road you see a figure/ object which could be an automobile. The vehicle is driving on the left hand side of the road indicating movement toward the viewer.
B.) Form
I.) large depth of field indicating distance.
II.) The image goes right off the edge of the frame which gives a feeling of over all size.
III.) The point of view is at eye level as if the drifter who was walking down the road captured the picture.
IV.) The relation of the elements within the frame all mesh within each other and create a very realistic state to which the view is captured within.

The image represents progression. Progression of life, love and the insecurity of the future. The sky and mountains represent the obstacles and tasks that often seem to get in our way in the path we take and roads we choose. Though sometimes the road may wind as well as lead us in the wrong direction and take us places we may not always seek, there is always room for improvement and growth. The large depth of field helps to crease a vastness which is life. The vehicle in the distant background traveling down the road represents the forward progression. It is traveling on the right hand side of the road which indicates movement toward the viewer. This movement will eventually lead to a destination. I'm sure Ansel Adams can agree in life and in photography that it's not about the destination it is about the journey and the process it takes to reach the destination. Including all the obstacles that stand in your path, and overcomming those obstacles to seek the desired result.

B.) Mark Strout Photography
C/D.) The Image is unfortunately untitled but if I had to name it I would call it “woman of sorrow”
E.) http://photographers.com/profile/markstout/

Analysis
A.) The primary subject matter is the woman as she is the only figure within the shot
B.) The woman is the most relevant form in regard to the photograph
I.) There is a very shallow depth of field to the photograph which could be achieved through the macro mode as you can see the photograph with crystal clear clarity
II.) The point of view from the image eye level
III.) There is a sense of high contrast within the image ad the background and the woman’s clothes are black as her bare skin seems to be glowing.
IV.) The darkness of the piece helps to create a sense of light and value. The dark background aids in the creation of an ominous past.
V.) The color of the piece might as well be black and white as those are the only colors within the piece.
Interperpretation
The primary subject matter of this photograph is the woman. She is slightly off center looking up to the sky with tears in her eyes almost as if she is searching for guidance. She seems to me that she comes from an unfortunate past and is reaching out for redemption. Her hands on her chest symbolize regret and pain almost as though she is seeking forgiveness for the hurt of another that she has caused. Her hair is blowing in the wind which could mean she is having a religious experience and receiving the guidance and strength to change the woman she has become.
We can tell by the eye level point of view and shallow depth of field help to tell the story of the woman and her search for something that is not there within her life. The light from above is shining down on her creating high contrast from the background and the subject matter.

-“I don't "take pictures". I produce powerful images that tell a story and have the emotional impact to motivate the viewer to take the desired action.”
